To be a good tank you pretty much need both eventually. If your running with a logi w/ armor rep, then i would focus on armor tanking. The current heavy suits favor armor. This may change in the future when we eventually get race specific suits.

Its a different strategy but can certainly work as you show. Good video. You might also try using vehicles. HAVs tend to draw out enemies.

Nova Knifes use to be standard equipment instead of the current rifle melee. Its has now been removed and you can use them as a secondary weapon granted you have the skills to use them.

Most HAV/dropships use Rails or Blasters. Some pilots have said that missiles were nerfed but I can't say for certain. I also can't comment on the different types but its something I'm specializing in now and should have feedback hopefully soon....

The good thing is you don't have to decide right away. The militia gear is a great place to start since you don't need the skills to use them. The gear gives you a flavor of the playstyle. From that you can decide what is your favorite.
